Background of the Study

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is a critical skill set for emergency nurses involved in the care of patients experiencing life-threatening cardiovascular events such as cardiac arrest, acute arrhythmias, or myocardial infarction. ACLS involves the application of advanced techniques, including the administration of medications, defibrillation, and airway management, aimed at stabilizing the patient and improving survival rates. Emergency nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess and intervene in these high-stakes situations, and their knowledge of ACLS is crucial for successful patient outcomes.

In the context of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), a leading medical institution in the Niger Delta region, emergency nurses play a vital role in providing immediate care during cardiac emergencies. However, there has been limited research examining the specific knowledge and skills of these nurses concerning ACLS protocols, which are essential in critical care settings. Effective ACLS knowledge can significantly impact the success of resuscitation efforts and patient survival rates. Understanding the current level of knowledge among emergency nurses at UPTH is important for identifying gaps in training and ensuring optimal care delivery in cardiac emergencies.

Statement of the Problem

Although ACLS is a vital component of emergency nursing practice, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of emergency nurses' knowledge and preparedness in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. This study seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge and competence of emergency nurses regarding ACLS, as gaps in this knowledge can lead to poor outcomes in the care of patients undergoing cardiac emergencies. Addressing these knowledge gaps will enable healthcare administrators to implement targeted training and development programs to improve patient care and outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of ACLS protocols among emergency nurses at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
  2. To determine the factors influencing the knowledge and application of ACLS among emergency nurses.
  3. To provide recommendations for improving ACLS training and preparedness among emergency nurses.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of ACLS protocols among emergency nurses at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital?
  2. What factors affect emergency nurses' knowledge and application of ACLS in clinical practice?
  3. How can ACLS training be improved to enhance the competence of emergency nurses?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital have a moderate to low level of knowledge of ACLS protocols.
  2. Factors such as years of experience, frequency of ACLS training, and access to resources significantly influence emergency nurses' knowledge of ACLS.
  3. There is a positive relationship between advanced ACLS training and improved patient outcomes in cardiac emergencies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on emergency nurses at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, specifically evaluating their knowledge and skills related to ACLS. Limitations may include self-reported biases and challenges in obtaining a comprehensive sample of participants.

Definitions of Terms

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): A set of clinical interventions used for the urgent treatment of life-threatening conditions, including cardiac arrest and arrhythmias, aimed at stabilizing and resuscitating patients.
  • Emergency nurses: Registered nurses specializing in providing urgent care to patients with acute medical conditions in an emergency department.
  • Knowledge of ACLS: The understanding and ability to apply ACLS protocols in real-world clinical scenarios.
