Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is a critical skill set for emergency nurses involved in the care of patients experiencing life-threatening cardiovascular events such as cardiac arrest, acute arrhythmias, or myocardial infarction. ACLS involves the application of advanced techniques, including the administration of medications, defibrillation, and airway management, aimed at stabilizing the patient and improving survival rates. Emergency nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess and intervene in these high-stakes situations, and their knowledge of ACLS is crucial for successful patient outcomes.
In the context of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), a leading medical institution in the Niger Delta region, emergency nurses play a vital role in providing immediate care during cardiac emergencies. However, there has been limited research examining the specific knowledge and skills of these nurses concerning ACLS protocols, which are essential in critical care settings. Effective ACLS knowledge can significantly impact the success of resuscitation efforts and patient survival rates. Understanding the current level of knowledge among emergency nurses at UPTH is important for identifying gaps in training and ensuring optimal care delivery in cardiac emergencies.
Although ACLS is a vital component of emergency nursing practice, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment of emergency nurses' knowledge and preparedness in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. This study seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge and competence of emergency nurses regarding ACLS, as gaps in this knowledge can lead to poor outcomes in the care of patients undergoing cardiac emergencies. Addressing these knowledge gaps will enable healthcare administrators to implement targeted training and development programs to improve patient care and outcomes.
The study will focus on emergency nurses at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, specifically evaluating their knowledge and skills related to ACLS. Limitations may include self-reported biases and challenges in obtaining a comprehensive sample of participants.
